INEOS 1:59 Challenge

Challenge:

Provide a traditional broadcast graphics package and a fully interactive overlay experience for the biggest foot race of the year.

Solution:

Eliud Kipchoge made history on October 12, 2019 and so did RCS and our partners at Sunset & Vine. While Kipchoge was becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours, we powered the INEOS 1:59 Challenge live stream of his accomplishment with a first-of-its-kind enhanced, interactive viewing experience.  The interactive overlay package – built by RCS using the Singular.live platform – featured clickable buttons over the video feed that allowed for a richer, more immersive experience.

Viewers were able to view Kipchoge’s current speed, the remaining time and distance, Kipchoge’s projected time, current weather, social media posts, a position map, and a list of the active pacemakers running alongside Kipchoge - all updating in real time throughout the event. What’s more, users could choose to display the overlays in one of six different languages, making the historic event equally accessible to viewers from around the globe.  This unprecedented level of interactivity during a live sports event was made possible by Singular’s revolutionary on-device rendering technology which allowed each viewer to have their own customizable experience.

This interactive display was available for viewers on computers, tablets, and mobile phones, with the size and positioning of the overlays dynamically adapting to the screen size of each device. In addition to the Singular interactive overlay integration, RCS provided a full Vizrt graphics package for the event including live data integration. With RCS providing design/animation services, a custom control application triggering both Singular overlays and Vizrt graphics, a Twitter widget and live data integration for all elements, this was truly a full service graphics solution for a landmark event.

Conclusion:

RCS unlocks Singular's interactive overlays capability, enhancing user engagement and personalization on a global scale for a major live sporting event which drew over 5M viewers for the live stream.
